LIFE Battle CO2 Project Wins 2019 BAP Best Environmental Practices Award
Eduardo Vara, director of conservation and R&D of Construcciones y Obras Llorente (COLLOSA), has received this morning the MPA Award that recognizes the environmental contribution of the LIFE Battle CO2 project in which the Valladolid corporation participates together with the Cartif Foundation and the Spanish Road Technology Platform (PTCarretera). The award ceremony took place during the XIV ASEFMA National Day, which is being held in Madrid, and was the president of the entity himself, Juan José Potti, who has delivered the same.
The results obtained from the MPA 2019 Award winning project show that during the manufacturing stage of an asphalt mixture made with biomass, an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is achieved. LIFE Battle CO2 eliminates the use of fossil fuels in the manufacturing stage of asphalt mixtures replacing them with local biomass certified as a heat source and brings the supply of renewable energy sources closer to the place of production.
The project developed by COLLOSA, CARTIF and PTCarretera since October 2015 is supported by the European LIFE Programme, the European Union’s only financial instrument exclusively dedicated to the environment. The development of the project has also marked a milestone for COLLOSA, which with the installation of the pilot prototype at its facility in Cubillas de Santa Marta (Valladolid), has become the first company in Spain with an environmental product declaration (DAP) of 1 metric ton of asphalt mix AC16 surf 50/70 S. The “Best Environmental Practices” Award (MPA) is a sectorial initiative that aims to make visible the R&D in asphalt mixes that reports technical, economic, sustainable and environmentally responsible advances. It responds to the growing environmental sensitivity of asphalt manufacturing entities and those linked to its production, transport and application.
ASEFMA is an association of entities dedicated to the manufacture and application of asphalt mixtures for road paving. Its statutory aims include the promotion of research and collaboration in the drafting of manufacturing, application and quality control standards. Its actions are aimed at user satisfaction and the preservation of the environment.
